Obituary of Gladys A. Schaible

Gladys A. Schaible October 17, 1935 – November 26, 2020 Resident of Walnut Creek “A life well lived leaves its gentle pattern on the hearts of all . . . and the world is a lovelier place because one person touched it with warmth and goodness and grace.” —author unknown Gladys Schaible passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thanksgiving, November 26, 2020. Born on October 17, 1935 in Springfield, MN, she grew up on a farm and was the second of three children. She married her husband, Robert Schaible, in 1959. They began their married life in Wisconsin, had 3 children, then later moved to Walnut Creek, CA where she lived for the past 42 years. While she held positions in a variety of different companies – Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, a podiatry practice, ADP Payroll Services, and Saint Matthew Lutheran Church as parish administrator – she felt her most important role was caring for her family, friends and others. Gladys will be remembered as a strong woman of faith who was always willing to give of her time and talents with a joyful heart. She was known for being humble and genuine, the hardest of workers, a good listener, and her kindness and warmth. She was always taking care of others, in many ways both large and small. Because she had a heart to serve, giving back was important to Gladys. She volunteered in countless ways with her church including Altar Guild, made hundreds of custom birthday cakes for at-risk youth, and built homes on many mission trips. As a member of P.E.O, a woman’s philanthropic organization, Gladys helped to fundraise for scholarships, awards and loans to help women advance. She also co-founded and ran the Christmas Closet (a holiday boutique thrift store) for more than 10 years, helping to raise funds to provide opportunities for the youth of the juvenile justice system. She was very creative and enjoyed singing in the choir, gardening, baking and cooking, entertaining and sewing. She was also an award-winning artist who enjoyed painting and was a long-time member and served on the board of the California Watercolor Association. However, her most cherished times were spent with family and especially loved being with and spoiling her six grandchildren. Gladys is predeceased by her husband, Robert Schaible, and her son, Mark Schaible. She is survived by her daughter and her family – Julie (Schaible) and Duane Lamoureux and children, Alexandra, Caroline and Vanessa; and her daughter and her family – Elizabeth (Schaible) and David Schrag and children, Nathaniel, Amelia and Lyla. A celebration of Gladys’ life will be held once it is safe to do so when her family and friends can gather together to remember and honor her. A private family service and interment will be held at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA. Memorial contributions may be made in Gladys’ memory to your favorite charity.
