Hello my name is Robert Fleischmann, I am the husband of Lois Fleischmann and I’d like to tell you a story about my loving wife. Lois Leone Levenhagen was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin June 11, 1926 to Hulda and Max Levenhagen. Her siblings were Bob, Doris and Burt. Lois attended elementary and high school with her two best friends, Amy Such and Helga Voight. Upon graduation from Riverside High School, Lois held various jobs until 1948 when she and her friend Helga decided to come to San Francisco on the train to live with her sister Doris. Upon arrival in Oakland in summer dresses, they took the ferry to San Francisco and were dismayed to find the women in fur coats. In the same year, the girls went to a tea dance at the Fairfax Town and Country Club in Marin county. After the dance they were waiting for the bus back to San Francisco when I, in my Model A sedan, asked if they wanted to ride to San Francisco. They said yes and I brought them back to their flat in a Victorian mansion on the corner of Laguna and Green in San Francisco, where they lived with eight girls. We dated and eventually married on January 3, 1953, upon my return from the Korean War. We lived in a little cottage in San Francisco where Pamela, our first child, was born. We then moved to Millbrae and had Carol, Robin and Charlie. At this time Lois’s mother came from Milwaukee and lived with us for 17 years. I became involved with the title insurance business and was later transferred to Stockton for two years and then transferred to Oakland. This is where we began our 51 years living in Moraga.
Lois was our family’s spiritual leader and became a charter member of both Holy Cross Lutheran Church and Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church. Lois was a great volunteer for many endeavors of the church and the community. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, going to our cabin in Lake Tahoe, neighborhood parties, taking long walks daily and traveling. She will be remembered as a loving wife of 65 years, wonderful mother, grandmother, friend, and a kind hearted soul.
I will miss her.
Lois is survived by her husband Bob; her children Pam (Craig) McKay, Carol (Billy) Phelps, Robin (Mark) Fleischmann-Lemmo, Charlie (Carolynn) Fleischmann; and her grandchildren Christian, Karith (Cris), Sawyer, Megan, Michael and Zachary.
Services will be at Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church 433 Moraga Way, Orinda on Saturday, January 27th at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the East Bay or the LARC program at Holy Shepherd Church.
