Pleasant Hill, California
John Fowler, 75, of Pleasant Hill, CA, passed away in Reno, NV, on September 17, 2017, surrounded by his family.
John was born in Spokane, WA, on September 4, 1942, and attended Lewis and Clark High School, from which he graduated in 1960. He joined the Navy ROTC while at Eastern Washington College, and upon graduation became a commissioned officer in the Navy. He served as a Supply Officer on an ammunition ship in the South Pacific during the Vietnam War.
John was a wonderful husband, father, and friend. He and Mary Koski met in San Francisco and were married on July 30, 1972. He worked for many years for Kaiser Aluminum as a controller, and spent his free time with his family and friends. He was an avid fly fisherman, fly tier, tennis player, and coffee drinker. Upon retirement, he and his wife Mary began spending summers in Dillon, MT, where he spent many hours in pursuit of his passion for catching the elusive 20-inch brown trout on the Beaverhead and Big Hole Rivers. He had many coffee groups he attended to catch up with his Starbucks, tennis, and fishing friends, and he loved a cup of coffee after dinner. He and Mary enjoyed fly fishing together. A remembrance will be held in Dillon next summer.
John is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Mary; his brother Richard and family; and his children and their spouses Amy and Tom Sparks, Andrew and Ellise Fowler, and Mark and Nikole Fowler; as well as 3 vibrant granddaughters Dorothy, Winnifred, and Agatha; and various grand dogs and grand cats.
A viewing will be held at 1 p.m., October 1, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Walnut Creek, with a funeral service at 2 p.m. A reception will follow at the Fowler residence. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of John may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Big Hole River Foundation.
