Harry Paul McCurdy Jr.

–

Pleasant Hill, California

Harry Paul McCurdy, Jr., affectionately known as Mike, passed away on February 23, 2026, at the age of 84, at
Martinez Guest Home Board and Care. He was born in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, on September 6, 1941, to Harry
Paul McCurdy, Sr. and Helene White McCurdy. Mike's life was a remarkable tapestry woven from diverse
experiences, profound friendships, and unwavering dedication to service.

Mike graduated from high school in 1959 and attended Lafayette College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in
Physics and was active in ROTC. Following his graduation, Mike completed two years at the Pittsburgh Theological
Seminary but felt called to serve his country. He enlisted in the Army and trained in munitions at Aberdeen Proving
Grounds. Rising to the rank of Captain, Mike served honorably in Korea from 1967 to 1968.

After his military service, Mike took a job at U.S. Steel where he trained as a computer programmer. A spirit of
adventure led him to the midwest, where he sought work and then spent two years obtaining a masters degree from
Indiana University before moving to San Francisco in September 1974. In 1984, he joined Wells Fargo Bank as a
computer programmer, a position he held until his retirement in 1999.

Mike's California family lay in his cherished friendships with Paul Swatek and his wife Linda, and with Willie/Bill Ng
(deceased) and Carol Dolezal. He was "Uncle Mike" to Jeremy and Grace Dolezal-Ng. Their bonds were a testament
to his belief in the importance of chosen family, bringing joy and support throughout his life. Mike treasured his
McCurdy and White family members and Pennsylvania friends and delighted in staying in touch with them. During an
extended period of growing disability, he was blessed with many amazing caregivers. His family is especially
appreciative the support from the Veterans Administration and their Spinal Cord Injury Department and with Bristol
Hospice.

Mike had a knack for storytelling and an outgoing, gracious, thankful, generous spirit. People responded with love for
him. His legacy from his father was a profound love of athletics, especially football. The Pittsburgh Steelers and the
Stanford Cardinals were Mike's main teams. He was an avid hiker in his active days. A lifelong Presbyterian, he was
a member of Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church. Mike leaves behind a legacy of love, camaraderie, and resilience
that will resonate in the hearts of all who knew him.

A celebration of Mike's life will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian
Church. His final resting place will be in Monongahela Cemetery, with his parents. In lieu of flowers, you may honor
his memory with a donation to KQED or Paralyzed Veterans of America.
