Pleasant Hill, California
Captain Garner Harrison Long
Feb. 3, 1922 - Apr. 5, 2016
Resident of Vallejo, CA and Cathedral City, CA
Garner passed away peacefully at home in Vallejo surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Brainerd, Minnesota, the son of Stacy S. Long and Edith E. Long. Leaving Minnesota at a young age, he traveled across the U.S. and Canada with his parents before settling in California where he attended the University of the Pacific.
Garner served in World War II in the Army Transportation Corp from 1943 - 1945 where he was awarded the Merchant Marine combat bar. He spent 50+ years working in the maritime industry as first mate, tugboat captain, and bar pilot, docking ships from San Francisco to Sacramento. He was a master at his craft. His innovations maneuvering and docking ships are still taught and used today.
Garner loved to travel. With his wife Claire, he spent many years traveling abroad and trailering with family and friends. At the age of 94 he was still embarking on new adventures, learning to sail his recently acquired 33' sloop, aptly named LOL.
Garner's wife of 67 years, Claire Elaine (Newton) Long passed away 3 years ago. He is survived by his daughters, Dianne Weisbrod (Lake Forest, CA) and Judy Long (Jackson, CA), and his sons David Long (Merced, CA) and Gerald Long (Moraga, CA), 7 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
