Pleasant Hill, California
Darryl Fredrick Sweetland, lover of all things fishing and golf, passed away after a battle with cancer on September 19, 2017. He was born in Alameda, California on July 8th, 1940. He was one of three boys. He moved to Walnut Creek in 1944 and graduated from Los Lomas High School in 1958. Darryl has been married to his wife, Barbara, for 54 years. They have a son, Doug, and daughter, Darlene, who are both married with children. Darryl has four grandchildren who were the light of his life.
Darryl began his career in the paint industry at a Fuller O'Brien paint store when he was 19 years old and worked his way up in the company, staying with them for over 40 years.
Darryl played basketball and baseball from childhood into adulthood, participating in several adult sports leagues into his 40s. He fished in any lake, river, or ocean available. He also played golf weekly. Darryl combined his gift of leadership and love of golf when he joined the SIRS Chapter 8. What started as a way to enjoy golf more frequently turned into his role as Big Sir of the chapter.
Retirement was very full for Darryl. He and Barbara travelled around the world. They went on an international trip every year and visited over 100 cities and 20 countries.
Darryl leaves behind his wife, Barbara Sweetland, son, Doug Sweetland, daughter, Darlene Sweetland, brother, Don Sweetland, and four grandchildren, Aaron, Drew, Miles, and Serena. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice of the East Bay or Tony La Russa's ARF. A celebration of his life will be held at Diablo Hills Golf Course in Walnut Creek on Friday, October 6, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.
