Pleasant Hill, California
Charles G. Emley, Jr. passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on May 9, 2024 after
a brief battle with cancer. Charlie was born in Red Bank, New Jersey on May 30, 1941 to
Charles Emley and Marie (Shumacher) Emley. He was raised in Matawan, New Jersey where he
attended the local schools.
Charlie graduated from Lehigh University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial
Management. He was part of the ROTC program and commissioned as a lieutenant in the Army
Signal Corps. He would later end his military career as a captain. He went on to earn an MBA
from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
In 1966, Charlie married Sally Talman. They later had two sons: Charles III and Robert. The
family moved to the Washington, DC area in 1970 when Charles was appointed Deputy Assistant
Secretary of the Interior Department where he worked directly with George Schultz.
Charlie then embarked upon a long and dynamic business career, which included executive
positions with IBM, Unisys, and DuPont. In the 1980s, Charlie joined the Los Angeles office of
Touche Ross (later Deloitte) and the family moved to Pasadena, California. He became a partner
and led the Southern California Information Technology Consulting Practice. Over the years, he
maintained friendships with many of his Deloitte colleagues.
Retirement was never an option for Charlie. After he left the corporate world, he formed Arroyo
Bridge Capital Partners with the aim of advising and running early-stage technology ventures. At
the end of his life, he was the Managing General Partner of the angelMD Catalyst Fund, which
he so enjoyed. He thrived being "in the arena."
After Charlie and Sally amicably divorced, Charlie met novelist Dianne Pugh on a blind date in
1991. They married in 2000. Their 100-year-old Pasadena, California home was the site of many
parties and celebrations. In 2012 they made a lifestyle change and moved to a rural, oak-studded
property in Paso Robles in the Central California Coast wine country, which they loved and
where they made forever friends. They later downsized and moved fulltime into their San
Francisco East Bay pied-a-terre.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Dianne, and his sons Charles III and Robert. He's also survived
by his sister Carole Price, brother-in-law Ed Price, nephews Eric Price (Katie) and Jeffrey Price
(Molly), and his aunt, Rose Fraipont.
Charlie was a devoted Yankee fan and could make a perfect dry martini. He avidly followed
current events and was dedicated to his lifelong fitness regime. A perfect day for him was lying
in the sun on a sandy beach with a newspaper and beside his beloved Dianne. He will be
remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, loyal friend, and for his tremendous intellect,
incredible wit and sense of humor.
A service will be held in the San Francisco East Bay in October and will be streamed over Zoom.
Details forthcoming.
